On Tuesday The Student Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest at the North Bengal University (NBU) in response to the tragic death of a research scholar. As per the reports, the deceased, a student from the Rural Development Department of the university, was found hanging in a rented house near the university’s Shiv Mandir area last Thursday. Subsequently, a complaint was actually lodged against University Professor Siddharth Shankar Laha at the Matigara police station after the body was found. Still, the professor has yet to be arrested, prompting the SFI’s demonstration.

In this regard, Tanmoy Adhikari, the district president of SFI, led the protest and demanded swift action against the accused professor. Adhikari emphasized that the lack of a vice-chancellor at the university is contributing to such incidents. Actually he further pointed out that similar occurrences have taken place in the past and cautioned that failure to address this case could lead to widespread protests across the district.
