Siliguri, June 07: Darjeeling District NJP-Phulbari Maxi Cab Owners Association (City Auto Drivers and Owners Association) has announced an indefinite strike in Siliguri from June 18. This announcement was made during a press conference held at Siliguri Journalists Club on Friday.
According to details gathered, the strike has been called in response to the increasing presence and operation of unregistered e-rickshaws in the city. According to the association, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation had approved permits for 3,850 e-rickshaws to operate within the city and strictly banned them from plying on main roads. However, the concrete number of e-rickshaws on main roads and highways has improved significantly, creating problems for auto drivers in the city.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, Ujjwal Kanti Ghosh said that despite several complaints from the association, e-rickshaws are running without any restrictions. As a result, the association has agreed to go on an indefinite strike on the movement of city autos. Formal information about the matter has been given to the District Magistrate of Darjeeling district, BDO of Matigara, DCP of Siliguri Traffic Department and other officials.
