Manipal Hospital Rangapani sets benchmark with successful cervical cancer treatment for 90-year-old patient

Mrs. Lina Gurung (name changed), a 90-year-old resident of Mirik, Darjeeling, has emerged cancer-free following treatment for Stage IB cervical cancer at Manipal Hospital, Rangapani. Under the expert care of Dr. Sourav Guha, Consultant – Radiation Oncology, Mrs. Gurung underwent 25 sessions of radical radiotherapy and 2 sessions of intracavitary brachytherapy, completing treatment in September 2022. Chemotherapy was not advised due to her age. Follow-up scans now show no evidence of disease.Dr. Guha emphasized that age should not deter patients from seeking treatment, noting, “With precise planning, careful monitoring, and modern radiation therapy, elderly patients can achieve excellent outcomes. Mrs. Gurung’s recovery symbolizes courage and quality cancer care available in the region.”
