Manipal Hospital Rangapani, a unit of the Manipal Hospitals Group, organised a community walkathon on World Cancer Day to promote cancer prevention, early detection and timely treatment, reinforcing its commitment to preventive healthcare and public awareness.
The walkathon commenced at Baghajatin Park at 7.30 am and concluded at Ramkrishna Club, drawing participation from over 100 people, including doctors, healthcare professionals and community members. The event symbolised collective support for cancer warriors, survivors, caregivers and families affected by the disease.
Senior oncology specialists Dr Sourav Guha and Dr Pankaj Chowdhary, along with Hospital Director Sanjay Singha Mahapatra, interacted with participants and shared key insights on cancer awareness. Dr Guha noted that India records more than 14 lakh new cancer cases annually, but nearly 40–50 per cent are preventable, while many others are highly treatable if detected early. He highlighted that early-stage cancers can have survival rates of 80–90 per cent in several common cases.
Mr Mahapatra said cancer is a social and economic challenge, stressing the importance of early screening, healthy lifestyles and balanced diets.
In Siliguri, healthcare stakeholders observed rising demand for preventive health check-ups and oncology screening services, reflecting growing awareness and increased investment in early diagnosis and wellness-led healthcare solutions in the region.
