Travel tech major MakeMyTrip has joined hands with food delivery platform Zomato to allow train passengers to order meals from over 40,000 restaurant partners across 130 stations. The service will deliver food directly to passengers’ seats, aiming to make long journeys more convenient.
With Indian Railways’ e-catering services witnessing a 66% year-on-year growth in FY 2024–25, serving over 90,000 passengers daily, MakeMyTrip is tapping into one of the fastest-growing mobility-linked consumption opportunities. Using its proprietary Live Train Status tool, the company will nudge travellers to order meals at optimal times during their journey. The initiative is expected to boost demand for travel-friendly meals from popular eateries near Howrah and Sealdah stations. Local vendors and restaurant partners are optimistic that the service will not only expand their reach but also cater to passengers seeking diverse food options during festive travel, especially ahead of Durga Puja and Diwali.
Raj Rishi Singh, Chief Business Officer at MakeMyTrip, said the new “Food on Train” marketplace builds on customer-centric innovations to enhance travel experiences. Zomato VP Rahul Gupta added that the tie-up reflects the company’s mission of serving India by making journeys seamless and enjoyable. As a Diwali special, passengers booking rail tickets via MakeMyTrip will receive a complimentary Zomato coupon for on-train food orders.
