Kangana Ranaut Supports Smriti Irani’s ‘Menstruation Not Handicap’ Remark; Says ‘No Need Of Paid Leaves For Periods’

Actress Kangana Ranaut has come in support of Smriti Irani’s ‘Menstruation Not Handicap’ Remark: Minister of Women and Child Development of India Smriti Irani said on Wednesday that menstruation(biological cycle) should not get a specific law for ‘paid leave’ for women.

The remarks by Minister of Women and Child Development sparked several reactions on social media. On Thursday, actress Kangana Ranaut took to her Instagram account and whole heartedly supported the minister’s statement.

Ranaut added to her IG Story, “Working women are a myth, there has not been a single non-working woman in the history of mankind. From farming to house chores to raising kids, women have always been working and nothing has come in the way of their commitment to their families or community or nation. Unless it is some specific medical condition, women don’t need paid leave for periods, please understand, it is periods, not some illness or handicap.”

Kangana’s statement comes at a time when Smriti’s remark on the issue has already raised war of discussions on social media. A mixed(men and women) group of people are divided in their opinion. One perspective says that granting menstrual leaves to women might effect negatively the concept of maintaining equality between genders in the workplace. While the other group of people, believes that this provision is not a special privilege but a fundamental requirement, similar to getting maternity leaves, ensuring a balanced and just approach to women’s well-being in professional settings.

While speaking in Rajya Sabha-the upper house, Smriti Irani had told, “As a menstruating woman, menstruation and the menstruation cycle is not a handicap, it’s a natural part of women’s life journey…We should not propose issues where women are denied equal opportunities just because somebody who does not menstruate has a particular viewpoint towards menstruation.”
