Actor Jacqueline Fernandez’s recent Instagram video of her pole dancing to upbeat music has put the spotlight on pole dance as a serious fitness discipline, not just a performance art. Experts say the activity offers a demanding full-body workout while being inclusive and adaptable for different age groups and fitness levels.
According to Dr Sukruti Pillai, physiotherapist and sports & exercise physiologist at Jaslok Hospital, pole dancing strengthens the upper and lower body, core muscles and improves flexibility, balance, coordination, posture and cardiovascular endurance. Set to music, it also becomes engaging and enjoyable, while boosting self-confidence, body awareness and self-expression.
However, safety is key. Dr Pillai stresses the importance of a proper warm-up to prepare joints and activate the cardiovascular system. Beginners should gradually train for complex spins, holds and climbs, and build off-the-pole strength, especially in the core and latissimus dorsi muscles, to safely support body weight against gravity.
