Homeowner alleges party bias as SMC destroy dilapidated building in Siliguri

Siliguri, Dec 04: A two-storey house located at Subhash Palli on Netaji Subhash Road in Ward No. 20 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation was demolished by the Municipal Corporation on Wednesday. The house owner, Nirmal Choudhury, expressed displeasure over the demolition and alleged that the action was taken on party lines.

Choudhary claimed that his 40 to 50-year-old house was not in a dangerously dilapidated state and was being renovated. He accused the Municipal Corporation of demolishing the house on the basis of political bias and alleged that they targeted the property because of the party colour associated with the house owner. He mentioned that he had responded to the notice received from the Municipal Corporation stating the plan for renovation, yet the house was demolished without any prior notice or information, which he found unfair.

In response, sources from the Siliguri Municipal Corporation clarified that Nirmal Choudhary’s house was in a very dilapidated condition, which was likely to collapse and cause a major accident. Sources said that a notice was issued to the house, but when no action was taken, the Municipal Corporation decided to demolish it for safety reasons.
