Himachal Pradesh: The Army will erect wind turbines in 20 border areas

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, met with top officials of the Army’s Central Command to discuss a plan to put wind turbines along the international border at 20 locations with a combined generation capacity of around 80,000 kWh yearly. The state government will fully assist the Army in carrying out its projects, the Chief Minister promised. The Army is considering installing wind turbines at 20 locations in border areas, for which a comprehensive project report has been produced, it was revealed during the conference.

The project is anticipated to produce 68,000–80,000 kWh of energy per year, which would be enough to power 120–160 homes. Chief Minister Sukhu expressed delight that the state government and the Army’s cooperative border tourism project is producing positive outcomes. According to him, the number of tourists in the border regions increased dramatically from about 21,000 in 2024 to over 70,000 in 2025—a three-and-a-half-fold increase. In order to improve the entire experience of tourists visiting the border areas, the Chief Minister instructed staff to provide hassle-free facilities.

Additionally, Chief Minister Sukhu reported that encouraging signs have been received and that the state government has written to the Union Government about the resumption of economic activity through Shipki La. India and China have decided to resume border trade via the Lipulekh Pass, Shipki-La Pass, and Nathu-La Pass as a result of the state government’s persistent efforts.
