The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has started a nationwide rollout of a revolutionary blood test capable of detecting over 50 types of cancer at early stages. Called the Galleri test, it works by identifying DNA fragments from cancer cells in the bloodstream.
Trial results from 140,000 people showed that the test could detect cancers before symptoms appear, especially hard-to-diagnose ones like pancreatic and esophageal cancers. Patients may soon be able to undergo this test during routine health checks.
Health experts in India and Bangladesh are optimistic about adapting this innovation through partnerships or tech transfer agreements to help diagnose cancer early in resource-strapped regions.
