Recently residents of Siliguri are bracing themselves for a potential drinking water shortage over the next two weeks. Actually the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has announced the launch of a dedicated helpline number keeping in mind the city’s concerns. According to reports, Mayor Gautam Deb addressed the media in this regard on Thursday in a press conference held at the SMC premises. The corporation is preparing to commence damming and river purification activities on the Teesta River starting this Friday. As a result, the supply of drinking water from the Teesta River will be interrupted for an estimated duration of 15 days.
During this period, the SMC will actually solely rely on sourcing water from the Mahananda River to distribute across various wards of Siliguri. For this reason, the water supply is anticipated to lead to a widespread scarcity within the city. In efforts to deal with the situation, the corporation has decided to send 21 water tanks to different wards. Additionally, a stock of one lakh water pouches has been procured, with each borough to receive 3000 pouches. The distribution of water pouches will be managed by SMC employees.
