Following an unexpected snowstorm, around 800 people were evacuated from East Sikkim

Up to 800 people were successfully evacuated from East Sikkim after becoming stranded between Tsomgo Lake and Thegu due to an unexpected snowstorm and hail, according to officials. The Indian Army and Sikkim Police worked together to rescue hundreds of visitors and residents who were caught in the sudden weather change. According to the authorities, there were no recorded fatalities or serious injuries, and the trapped people were safely taken to secure locations. Road conditions were dangerous due to the unexpected snowstorm and hail that occurred on Sunday afternoon, making it hard for cars to travel.

Rescue crews moved quickly, offering aid right away and setting up makeshift shelters for those in need. No travel permits were issued on Monday, and Nathula Pass has been closed to tourists due to the heavy snowfall. According to officials, the decision was made with visitor safety and hazardous traffic conditions in mind. Unexpected snowfall on Sunday also forced the evacuation of a number of tourist cars close to Nathula, requiring the assistance of the Sikkim Police and locals.

According to authorities, taking such preemptive action was essential to averting any unfortunate events. In the meantime, authorities have warned tourists who are considering visiting East Sikkim areas that the state may see additional rains in the coming days, according to the meteorology service. For the next few days, tourism in Eastern Sikkim has been suspended by the government; the suspension will be lifted according on the weather.
