Fish production soars by 104% as the blue economy gains momentum

According to government data, inland fisheries increased by 142% during the same period, from 61 lakh tonnes to 147.37 lakh tonnes, while the nation’s total fish production increased by 104%, from 96 lakh tonnes in 2013–14 to 195 lakh tonnes in 2024–25. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, the Fisheries Department authorized fisheries development projects of Rs 21,274.16 crore as of July 22. The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY) has already approved Rs 11.84 crore as of April to facilitate early implementation.

“According to official data, as of August, over 26 lakh stakeholders, including private companies, micro-enterprises, Fish Farmer Producer Organizations, and fishermen, had registered on the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP).” India is the world’s second-largest producer of fish, accounting for about 8% of worldwide production. For millions of households, especially those in rural and coastal areas, the industry provides a major source of food, employment, and cash. Its scope and methodology have changed significantly in the past ten years.

The Department of Fisheries in India has allocated Rs 17,210.46 crore to infrastructure projects under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, with Rs 11.84 crore sanctioned in April.
