Dhaka Pushes for Greener Future with Massive Solar Initiative

Bangladesh is taking a significant step toward renewable energy expansion by announcing a nationwide plan to connect over 20,000 rural households to solar mini-grids by 2026. The move, supported by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, aims to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and make clean energy accessible in remote areas.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said the initiative would not only ensure energy security but also create thousands of green jobs. The project targets coastal and flood-prone regions that face frequent electricity disruptions.

According to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), nearly 95% of the country is now connected to electricity, but renewable sources account for less than 5%. The solar expansion could help Bangladesh reach its goal of 40% renewable energy by 2041.

Experts in India and Bhutan have praised the project, suggesting that regional collaboration could help the entire subcontinent transition toward cleaner energy.
