Bangladesh has approved construction of its first offshore wind farm in the Bay of Bengal, aimed at diversifying the nation’s energy mix and reducing dependency on fossil fuels. The $1.5 billion project will be developed with British and Danish support, generating 1,200 MW of electricity once completed by 2029.
Energy Minister Nasrul Hamid said the move will mark a “new era of clean energy” for the country, helping to meet growing demand while reducing carbon emissions. The government hopes to produce at least 40% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2040.
This development has drawn regional attention, as neighbouring India and Sri Lanka have also accelerated wind power investments along coastal zones. Environmentalists across South Asia hailed the decision as a regional milestone for sustainable development and energy security.
