Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL India) is preparing to protect its over 70 lakh songs catalog, following a ruling by the Delhi High Court that prevents entities from playing copyrighted songs without the necessary license. PPL India, an 80-year-old entity, manages a vast collection of songs assigned by over 400 music labels, including major players like T-series, Saregama, Sony Music, Universal Music, Warner Music, Times Music, Speed Records, and more.
The rulings are a significant victory for PPL India, which manages an extensive catalog of songs assigned by over 400 music labels. The court has also resisted the unauthorized use of copyrighted sound recordings by prominent establishments like One8 Commune, Tim Hortons, Aptronix, Unicorn, Gola Sizzler, and Str8up Hospitality.
The Delhi High Court also acknowledged misleading campaigns by associations like the DJ Association Chandigarh, which sought to discourage the public from obtaining licenses from PPL while playing its music. PPL India expressed gratitude to the Delhi High Court for its support in upholding copyright rights and ensuring fair compensation for creators. These landmark decisions underscore the importance of respecting intellectual property rights in the music industry.
