Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, during his address at the Siliguri Bar Association praised the contribution of lawyers in upholding justice and democratic values, while also raising serious concerns over the poor state of infrastructure at the Siliguri Court. Speaking at the event attended by legal professionals from across Siliguri and the North Bengal region, Bista called the gathering a meeting of “some of the finest legal minds.” He highlighted the importance of the legal profession in maintaining the strength of the Constitution, protecting civil liberties and ensuring the rule of law. “Our lawyers are the backbone of our justice system. They interpret the Constitution and ensure that every citizen’s rights are protected,” said Bista. He further added, “The Siliguri Bar Association is not just a professional body. It plays a vital role in making justice accessible to everyone.”
The MP also spoke on the long-standing issues with the court’s condition. He said that despite Siliguri’s fast growth and the presence of talented legal professionals, the court infrastructure had not seen any meaningful development for decades. “Siliguri Court has remained in a dilapidated condition. There has been no proper development of facilities, no investment in modern infrastructure. This is not acceptable for a city that is growing as fast as Siliguri,” he said. Bista stressed that Siliguri has the potential to become a major center for justice in North Bengal, but for that to happen, the court must have facilities that match the city’s importance. “We cannot have justice delayed due to poor infrastructure. We owe it to the people of this region and to our legal fraternity,” he added.
He assured the legal community that as their elected representative, he is fully committed to addressing the court’s infrastructure issues. “As your Member of Parliament, I will do everything I can to ensure that the Siliguri Court gets improved infrastructure and facilities. This is not just about buildings; it is about dignity, accessibility, and the future of justice in our region,” Bista said.
