Darjeeling MP Raju Bista inaugurates first Gorkha Cup Boxing Championship in Siliguri

The spirit of sports came alive at Pioneer Ground on Panighatta Road in Bagdogra, Siliguri, as the first-ever Gorkha Cup – a national-level elite boxing championship  was inaugurated with much enthusiasm and pride. The event was graced by Member of Parliament from Darjeeling, Raju Bista, who officially opened the tournament in the presence of several decorated sports heroes and respected guests. The championship is being organized by the Siliguri Boxing Association which is affiliated with the Darjeeling District Boxing Association. It is also supported by the Tenzing Norgay Smriti Sangha. The organizers say the Gorkha Cup is not just a sports event but a celebration of youth talent and a step towards encouraging sports culture in the region.

Present at the inaugural ceremony were Olympian and retired Honorary Captain S.K. Rai, Asian Games silver medalist Som Bahadur Pun and Vir Chakra awardee Honorary Captain Gyanendra Rai, all of whom received a warm welcome from the audience.  Speaking at the event, Raju Bista spoke about the importance of sports in shaping the lives of young people. He said that sports teach discipline, hard work, and teamwork. “Competitions like the Gorkha Cup not only help athletes grow but also keep them away from bad influences like drugs,” Bista said. “This event will inspire youth from Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars to pursue boxing and represent our region at national and international levels.”

He also thanked all the civil society organizations and the many volunteers who worked hard to make the event a success. He praised their dedication and team spirit, saying their efforts reflect the true strength of community participation. Among the other notable guests were Darjeeling District BJP President Khokan Bhattacharya and Upper Bagdogra Pradhan Sandeep Sinha. The event also saw a gathering of sports lovers, local leaders and many young boxers who are eager to show their talent in the ring.
