The massive iceberg A23a, measuring approximately 3,300 square kilometers and weighing nearly one trillion tonnes, has run aground near South Georgia Island after drifting north from Antarctica since 2020. Scientists had feared that the iceberg could collide with the island or become lodged in its shallow waters, potentially disrupting the feeding patterns of local penguin and seal populations. As of March 1, the iceberg has been stationary about 73 kilometers from the island. Researchers are monitoring the situation closely to determine if the iceberg will remain grounded or continue its drift, as its position could have significant ecological impacts on the region’s wildlife.
