In response to the health challenges posed by the monsoon season, Cipla has launched the Breathefree Monsoon Yatra, a nationwide initiative aimed at improving respiratory health. Over the next three months, more than 4,000 camps will be conducted across India, providing screenings for over 350,000 individuals to detect chronic lung diseases like asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
As India faces a growing health crisis with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) accounting for about 60% of all fatalities, chronic respiratory diseases rank among the top three NCDs. Early detection and intervention can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life, yet many asthma and COPD cases remain undiagnosed. Currently, about 70% of individuals with severe asthma symptoms and up to 98% of COPD cases go undiagnosed, underscoring the urgent need for increased screening and awareness.Dr. Soumya Ghosh, Consultant Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist in Siliguri, highlighted the critical importance of this initiative. “The monsoon season brings numerous triggers for respiratory issues, including heightened humidity, mold, cold air, and an increased risk of viral infections. These factors are especially challenging for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions,” said Dr. Ghosh. “The Breathefree Monsoon Yatra is vital in providing timely screenings, counseling on disease management, and emphasizing treatment adherence during this high-risk season.”
In Siliguri, a significant market affected by these seasonal changes, the Breathefree Monsoon Yatra will offer much-needed support. The city’s humid climate and rapid urbanization contribute to higher rates of respiratory problems during the monsoon. This initiative aims to provide essential resources and education to help residents manage their health more effectively. Cipla’s Breathefree initiative has been pivotal in offering comprehensive support to asthma and COPD patients through on-ground screening camps, an AI-enabled Breathefree Digital Educator platform, and device training videos. The Breathefree Monsoon Yatra continues this effort, ensuring individuals across the country have access to the information and resources needed to maintain their respiratory health throughout the year.
