Siliguri, September 26: A businessman named Bikki Prasad, resident of Pradhan Nagar, Siliguri has been arrested for selling spurious liquor.
The arrest came following a raid by the Excise Department at a government-licensed foreign liquor shop in Kurseong.
Around 30 litres of spurious liquor was recovered during the raid, which has a market value of around Rs 2.5 lakh. The accused allegedly pasted stickers of expensive foreign liquor on the fake products and sold them to unsuspecting customers.
Deputy Excise Collector Kirat Singh Birdi said that after interrogating the accused, during further investigation, the department found a large consignment of fake liquor hidden under the house of Bikki Prasad. A large quantity of fake liquor was recovered from the spot.
The accused was produced in Kurseong court on Thursday. The Excise Department has started investigation to trace the source of the spurious liquor and fake stickers.
