In a significant shift in education policy, the UK Department for Education has announced a nationwide ban on mobile phones inside classrooms, effective from September 2026. The move comes amid growing concerns over screen addiction, cyberbullying, and declining academic focus.
Under the new policy, students will be required to deposit their phones before entering school premises. Exceptions will be made only for medical emergencies or special education needs.
The UK joins countries like France and Italy, where similar bans are already enforced. Educational authorities in Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh are also evaluating the impact of smartphones in classrooms and may adopt similar reforms.
