Comparisons to Aditya Sarpotdar’s upcoming vampire movie Thamma, which stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna as the leads, have been made ever since Dominic Arun’s Malayalam film Lokah Chapter 1-Chandra, which starred Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead role, was released and met with positive reviews. Ayushmann responded to these comparisons in an interview with Galatta Plus, saying that Thamma was a “massier” movie than Lokah.
Ayushmann responded, “We are high on comedy,” when asked about the parallels between Lokah and Thamma. Even while I had fun at Lokah, I also think thatIt wasn’t released in Allahabad, where I was filming at the time. Therefore, our film is more popular since it also appeals to Hindi-speaking audiences. For some multiplex audiences, Lokah might serve as a nice introduction to this concept, but our birth, circumstances, and narrative are distinct. However, there are very few parallels.
“Having DQ (Dulquer Salmaan) and Thomas (Tovino), and Kalyani just doing their thing, it was a different world altogether,” Rashmika added, adding that she watched Lokah and is “good friends” with Kalyani. I can assure you that it will be a different experience since I know what we have in store and where we are coming from. The two films cannot be combined. I can see where you’re coming from, but when you leave Thamma tomorrow, the topic will be different.
In the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, which also includes movies like Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya, Thamma is the fifth installment. The movie, which will examine vampire mythology, will be released in theaters on October 21 in honor of Diwali. In the interview, producer Dinesh Vijan also mentioned that, although he hasn’t seen Lokah, he has heard it was “exceptional.” He added that “mythos” was the foundation of Thamma’s origins, saying that this was the main distinction between the two movies.
For the unfamiliar, Lokah explores other mythological monsters in their folklore, such as Odiyan (a shapeshifter portrayed as a ninja) and Chathan (a goblin), while drawing influence from the legend of Kalliyankattu Neeli (who is portrayed in the movie as a vampire) in Kerala. It is the first Malayalam movie to earn over 300 crores globally. The movie also starred Naslen and Sandy Master, with cameos from Dulquer, Tovino, Anna Ben, Soubin Shahir, and other actors.
