Avocado Oil Healthier Than Refined Oils, Says Fortis Doctor

Avocado oil may be a healthier alternative to refined vegetable oils, according to Dr Pankaj Sharma of Fortis Hospital. He says refined oils have a low smoke point and oxidise quickly when heated, producing harmful free radicals that can damage cells and worsen conditions like fatty liver and insulin resistance.

In contrast, avocado oil has a high smoke point of up to 270°C, making it suitable for common Indian cooking methods such as sautéing, roasting, and shallow frying. Rich in monounsaturated fats, it helps improve cholesterol balance and reduces inflammation linked to excess omega-6 fatty acids found in many vegetable oils.
Dr. Sharma adds that avocado oil promotes satiety, stabilises blood sugar levels, and does not spike insulin, making it beneficial for people with obesity, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome. It also supports gut and liver health by aiding fat digestion and bile flow, contributing to better long-term metabolic health.
