A senior police official reported that an American citizen was detained in this Uttar Pradesh area on Wednesday while attempting to enter Nepal with a bogus passport and visa.
American citizen Eric Daniel Beckwith, 64, was detained by the immigration division in the Sonauli district early in the morning after his passport and visa paperwork were discovered to be false, according to immigration officer Shabbir Kumar at the Sonauli checkpoint. Beckwith was travelling from India to Nepal at the time.
The Maharajganj district’s Sonauli is a well-known hub for transit between India and Nepal. It is situated where the two countries’ borders meet.
