Ashwini Vaishnaw: August 15, 2027, will see the launch of India’s first bullet train

The nation will have its first bullet train on August 15, 2027, according to Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The first segment of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor would open on that day, according to the railway minister. A gradual rollout of the 508 km line, which would reduce travel time from Mumbai to Ahmedabad from more than seven hours to roughly two hours, begins with this 47 km Surat-Bilimora leg. The ground-breaking project promises to introduce world-class high-speed rail standards in India and revolutionize intercity travel by drastically reducing travel times.

According to the railway minister, the second operational part will link Vapi to Surat, then an extension from Vapi to Ahmedabad, and lastly the Thane-Ahmedabad line. Ashwini Vaishnaw stated, “The bullet train will be ready in 2027, August 15th, 2027. during a news conference in New Delhi. The route from Surat to Bilimora will be the first to open. Vapi to Surat will thereafter open. Vapi to Ahmedabad will then open, followed by Thane to Ahmedabad, and finally Mumbai to Ahmedabad.”

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor, one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, will connect major cities across Gujarat and Maharashtra, marking India’s entry into high-speed rail. Significant civil and systems work on the project has already been completed. Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon flag off the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train between Kolkata (Howrah) and Guwahati. The service is expected to begin around January 18–19, with fares significantly lower than air travel, and the exact launch date to be announced soon.
