As winter tourism soars, Gangtok need snow safety precautions

In response to the growing number of tourists visiting the area, Gangtok police have implemented stringent winter safety procedures at the Sherathang Check Post, mandating that all cars carry chains and snow removal equipment. Tire chains must be installed to prevent hazardous skids on icy mountain roads, and shovels must be carried for emergency snow removal. Vehicles must arrive at the 3rd Mile Check Post before 10:30 am and leave by 5:00 pm, according to strict entry and exit schedules set by officials. The rigorous timetable attempts to keep visitors from becoming stranded in worsening conditions after dark.

Vehicle permits are now required to be obtained ahead of time, which is a change from earlier, more accommodating procedures. The new method requires all vehicles to carry garbage bags or dustbins as part of necessary waste control procedures. Although there were initial worries regarding the costs of implementation, the measures have been generally accepted by tourism operators. The rules were implemented as Gangtok’s winter attractions—especially the chance to see snow—saw record levels of visitor interest.
