Air India is reportedly seeking financial assistance of at least ₹10,000 crore ($1.14 billion) from its owners, Singapore Airlines and Tata Sons, to help the carrier recover from a major crisis following the June plane crash that killed over 240 passengers. The funding request aims to support a complete overhaul of Air India’s systems, enhance its services, and build in-house engineering and maintenance capabilities, according to media reports.
Sources told Bloomberg that any contribution would be made in proportion to ownership, with the structure—whether an interest-free loan or equity infusion—yet to be decided. Tata Group, which acquired Air India in 2022, holds 74.9% of the airline, while Singapore Airlines owns 25.1%.
The June 12 crash of Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft operating flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, claimed 260 lives, including 241 passengers, marking one of India’s worst aviation tragedies. CEO Campbell Wilson called the incident “devastating” and said the airline continues to provide full support to affected families, survivors, and first responders.
