Siliguri, May 29: The Government Railway Police (GRP) and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Police in a joint operation arrested a group of seven Rohingya people, including a child, allegedly while on their way to Punjab via NJP railway station.
According to details collected, the captured persons, which included four women, three men and a child, were identified as Zubera Begum, Rehana Akhtar, Ashiya Begum, Haseena Begum, Noor Hakim, Saddam Hussain and Azinur. The arrested group came from a refugee camp in Bangladesh.
It is noteworthy that many Rohingyas often migrate illegally from Bangladesh to different parts of the country through NJP station. However, on Tuesday officials stopped them and found the group boarding the Sampark Kranti Express at Badarpur Junction in Assam.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the group was moving from Delhi to Punjab. However, the real intention behind his visit to Punjab is unclear.
