Phansidewa, Dec 02: In a major breakthrough, the Bidhannagar Investigation Centre police have arrested a man in a case of smuggling of buffaloes in a container truck. The driver, Mohammad Haider (36), a resident of Uttarakhand, was arrested.
The arrest was made following a raid at the Murliganj check-post in Phansidewa block, where the vehicle was intercepted and 40 buffaloes were recovered. The driver was unable to produce valid documents for the buffaloes and was later arrested. Police revealed that the buffaloes were being illegally transported from Bihar to Assam.
Haider was produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Monday and investigations are underway to ascertain if others were involved in the smuggling operation.
